About The Author

Hoo Ban Khee, was the Senior Associate Editor of the Star, has spent about four decades in journalism after laving school in 1963.

He started his career with a Chinese daily, the China Press, in Kuala Lumpur before joining the English daily Malayan Times and later, the Eastern Sun. Both have ceased publication.

In 1968, he joined the Malaysian national news agency Bernama as one of the pioneers. He was Bernama's bureau chief in Penang from 1980 to 1983; Bernama's foreign correspondent in Manila from 1983 to 1984 and later, editor of Bernama Economic News Service.

He joined the Star 1989 as Associate Editor and helped set up The Star's European Affair Bureau in London in 1994 and in 2004, he was tasked to set up The Star's Beijing office, thus becoming the first Malaysian journalist working full-time in Communist China.

Besides the daily news routine, Ban Khee also ran regular columns under the Eurofile while he was in London; Beijing Express and Tale-of Two-Cities while he was The Star's bureau chief in Beijing.

His other columns Short-Take in the Star's Metro Section and Over-a-cuppa in StarTwo, also enjoyed strong following.

He was awarded Ahli Mangku Negara (A.M.N) by the Yang diPertuan Agung in 2002.

Now retired, he does gardening as his hobby and also enjoying his retirement with his wife, children and grandchildren.
